Boston, MA -- (SBWire) -- 10/27/2014 --We forecast that Singapore's consumer electronics spending will increase 6.7 % in US dollar terms in 201 4 to reach USD 4.2 bn, with the withdrawal of official support for XP in April 2014 and the FIFA World Cup in Brazil boosting demand for PCs and TV sets respectively. We expect market growth to accelerate from 2013 after a squeeze on growth from price erosion in the TV and notebook markets, as well as cannibalisation of digital camera and mp3 player volumes associated with the proliferation of multi-functional smartphone ownership. While growth is forecast to accelerate it will remain below emerging markets in APAC as Singapore has one of the highest smartphone and tablet penetration rates in the world, meaning it has passed through the period of strongest growth associated with rapidly rising penetration.

Headline Expenditure Projections

Computer Hardware Sales: USD2.04bn in 2013 to USD2.12bn in 2014, +4.0% in US dollar terms. The preference of Singaporean consumers for premium devices will ensure that value growth will continue despite a slowdown in the tablet market as a result of saturation.

AV Sales: USD811mn in 2013 to USD968mn in 2014, +9.4% in US dollar terms. After a contraction in 2013 we expect the market to return to growth in 2014, driven by demand for next generation games consoles and TV sets, as well as a boost to TV demand from the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Handset Sales: USD1.06bn in 2013 to USD1.09bn in 2014, +2.3% in US dollar terms. We believe the handset market has reached a plateau with smartphone penetration of 70% at YE13, which combined with price erosion, will see much slower value growth from 2014.

Key Trends & Developments

There are indications in 2014 that competition in the smartphone market is heating up - and there could be a new round of price erosion even though volume growth opportunities are limited. Statcounter data show Chinese smartphone vendor Xiaomi's handsets accounted for...
