High Prevalence of Arthritis Linked to Increase in Obesity

Portland, OR -- (SBWire) -- 10/30/2014 --Diabetes and heart disease are two medical conditions that are closely associated to obesity. However, few realize that excess weight also increase a person’s risk to many other conditions, including arthritis. As a matter of fact, the high prevalence of arthritis has been linked to the increase in the number of people who are obese.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), two out of three obese individuals in the United States have been diagnosed with arthritis. Obesity also makes arthritis symptoms worse for those who are already suffering from the condition.

Osteoarthritis affects more than 27 million Americans. This arthritic condition can develop due to many factors, including injury, age, and general wear and tear. Now, according to experts, we know that those who are obese are far more likely to suffer from arthritis.

If a person has an excessive weight, the joints suffer from more stress and this speeds up the wear and tear that normally takes place as a person ages. Those who are young and obese are more likely to suffer from joint damage.

The chair of the rheumatology division at the Mayo Clinic, Eric Matteson, MD, stated that weight plays an important part in joint stress. People who are overweight are more susceptible to arthritis because their weight stresses their weight-bearing joints, such as the knees and hips, much more than a person who weighs less.

Experts believe that for every extra pound of excess weight, it puts approximately 4 pounds of extra pressure on their knees. This means that those who carry an excess weight of 10 pounds exert 40 pounds of extra pressure on their knees. Furthermore, the additional weight also causes more problems to damaged joints.

“The excess weight can significantly increase a person’s risk of arthritis. However, fat also plays an important role in increasing this risk. Fat can create and release chemicals that promote or aggravate inflammation,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.

The Arthritis Foundation recommends that people reduce consumption of fatty food and beverages to avoid obesity. Excess weight is not just linked to osteoarthritis, but also to rheumatoid arthritis and gout.

There are also other resources used in maintaining joint health and one is through using natural supplements that contain glucosamine. Glucosamine is naturally created by the body, however the levels produced decrease with age. Many believe that glucosamine supplements can support the body's natural ability to maintain joint health www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4
