Ewing, NJ -- (SBWire) -- 10/31/2014 --With the arrival of the natural beauty of the fall foliage, danger also presents itself. Leaves create a hazardous environment whether they are dry or wet. The wet leaves will create a very slick surface that may lead to a bad slip and fall. Dry leaves can accumulate and hide uneven surface that can cause an unsuspecting individual to lose balance and fall. In an effort to increase safety, Goodwill Industries is now offering advice on fall prevention.

Goodwill Industries offers four pieces of advice on preventing falls. The most prominent way to prevent a fall is to improve balance and strength. Proper exercise, such as Tai Chi, will help build the muscles the body uses to maintain balance, such as abdominal, core, and leg muscles.

The medicines a person takes may also increase their likelihood of falling. As the individual ages, the prescription may affect the individual in a different manner than it initially had, causing dizziness or lightheadedness. It is important to have a doctor regularly review prescribed and over-the-counter medicines to ensure they are not starting to negatively affect the body.

Another leading cause of falls is poor vision. Blurred vision may cause the individual to miss their step or not see an obstruction leading to a fall. It is recommended to have eyeglasses updated on a yearly basis to provide optimal vision.

With many falls happening in the home, it is important to create a safe living space. Making their homes safer by reducing tripping hazards, adding grab bars inside or outside the tub or shower and next to the toilet, adding railings on both sides of stairways, and improving the lighting in their homes.
