Curcumin Found to Be Potentially Helpful in Cystic Fibrosis Sufferers

Portland, OR -- (SBWire) -- 11/04/2014 --Curcumin supplements are widely used by those who suffer from arthritis and want to improve their overall health. They are believed to be a natural alternative to pharmaceutical drugs that is both safe and effective. However, there seems to be more to curcumin than just being a pain relief option.

According to research, curcumin can potentially be helpful in cystic fibrosis sufferers. This condition is fatal and has the tendency to attack the lungs with a thick mucus, which also results in life-threatening infections. It was found that the natural ingredient could have the potential to correct the genetic defect that usually causes cystic fibrosis.

There are more than 30,000 children and adults in the United States who are suffering from cystic fibrosis. What makes the condition more alarming is that these sufferers have an average life expectancy of approximately 37 years. The thick mucus also attacks the pancreas and it interrupts the body’s ability to absorb nutrients.

“The symptoms of cystic fibrosis can be severe. There are those that suffer from a great deal of pain while others just experience milder symptoms. There is still no known cure for the condition, but scientist are working hard to find potential treatments, and this is why the research into curcumin is so important,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.

Thus far, the scientific studies on the effects of curcumin in cystic fibrosis have been conducted using mice as subjects. It was found that curcumin was able to correct the defect that causes cystic fibrosis.

The University of Washington and John Hopkins University are starting to conduct studies on the effects of curcumin in humans suffering from cystic fibrosis. The condition is normally characterized by the patients having excessively salty sweat. The studies will seek to evaluate the effect of curcumin by measuring the salt levels in patients. If the salt levels drop, it means that curcumin may have a positive effect.

While studies are not yet conclusive, more and more cystic fibrosis sufferers are using curcumin supplements as part of their regime to heal their body and regain their health. With good preliminary results, many scientists and health experts are hopeful that curcumin can make an impact in the management of cystic fibrosis in the years to come (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
