Albany, NY -- (SBWire) -- 12/02/2014 --Glyphosate Market: A Brief Overview :

Glyphosate and glyphosate-containing products represent a category of extremely effective chemical herbicides, which are also one of the world's best selling herbicides. Herbicides containing glyphosate are the most widely used herbicides in Europe and are commonly used in farming, gardens, parks, and forestry. Glyphosate-containing products also play an important role in the production of genetically modified (GM) crops, made genetically resistant to herbicides.

In the recent years, a lot of concerns have been raised about the safety of glyphosate on human bodies. Studies state that amongst people tested from around 18 European nations, urine of nearly 40% people tested positive for glyphosate remains. Due to this, there have been demands from around the world for these products to be banned. The market is however flourishing and shows no signs of a slowdown.

The global use of glyphosate and related products is growing consistently instead. Worldwide, around 718.6 kilo tons of glyphosate products were sold and the sales were estimated at US$5.46 billion in 2012. This market was valued more than the combined markets of all other herbicides in the world. With time, the use of glyphosate products has kept on increasing, mostly because of the increased production and increased adoption of GM glyphosate-resistant crops. Industry analysts estimate that the global glyphosate market could grow approximately at a CAGR of 7.2% over the next four to five years, and amass a value of US$8.79 billion by 2019.

Purpose Of using Glyphosate :

Glyphosate is not used in its pure form in herbicides. It is also not used for controlling weed in any growing crop per se, unless the crop is genetically modified for resisting glyphosate. The use of glyphosate with non-GM glyphosate resistant crops would kill the crop along with the weeds as well. But, studies state that glyphosate is also heavily used with non-GM crops, and its use has been approved for a variety of purposes in Europe.

While no data is published by the European Union about the use of pesticides, surveys estimate that glyphosate is the top ranked herbicide in arable crop production in the UK. In Germany, glyphosate is used on around 39% of the country's arable land, and nearly two-thirds of the total consumption of glyphosate is used for three crops namely winter barley, winter wheat, and rape oilseed (canola). Nearly 50-60% sunflower crops in Romania, Hungary, and France are treated with glyphosate before harvest. Of all the pesticides used in Denmark, glyphosate accounts for nearly 35% share.

What Fueled the Global Demand for Glyphosate and Related Products?

The widespread use of glyphosate came after 1990s when Monsanto developed GM crops which were resistant to the effects of glyphosate. Before this, there was no way that glyphosate could be directly used with growing crops, but it was the introduction of GM crops that opened new doors of opportunity for the global glyphosate market. Currently, nearly 85% GM crops are developed so that they are resistant to herbicides, which demonstrates huge growth potential for the glyphosate market. Rising adoption of GM crops and glyphosate-containing products in the developing parts of Asia-Pacific and Latin America has also largely added to increased demands for glyphosate on a global front. Demand for glyphosate from Asia-Pacific accounted for a nearly 30% share of the overall demand from the global glyphosate market in the year 2012.
