Boston, MA -- (SBWire) -- 12/10/2014 --In Sweden, about 70% of women enjoy being tanned according to a survey by professional publication Tidningen Kosmetik in 2013. According to this survey, 54% travel abroad to sunbathe at least every other year. 82% of those that travel abroad to get a tan use sun protection but the most popular SPF level used is 15-20. The quantity of sun protection applied is also on average about half of the recommended level. Even though Swedes are constantly reminded about the dangers of not using enough sun protection for sensitive Scandinavian skin, Sweden has one of the highest incidence rates of skin cancer in the world. This is partly due to many Swedes opting to go on sunny holidays during the winter, with their pale and unprotected winter skin thus being exposed to strong sun. It is thus clear that sun care could have much stronger sales if manufacturers made more convenient and protective products available and the sunbathing patterns of Swedes changed.

Competitive Landscape

Beiersdorf leads sales of sun care and accounted for 20% value share in 2013. The company's leadership comes from offering two well-known and strong mass brands, namely Nivea Sun and Eucerin Sun. Nivea Sun is the leading range in sun care and alone accounted for 17% value share in 2013.

Industry Prospects

Sun care is expected to benefit from new product formats and growing awareness among Swedes about the dangers of sunbathing in the forecast period. Sun care is thus expected to see an improved performance in the forecast period compared to the review period. Consumers are expected to develop a more sophisticated understanding of sun care as more Swedes try to increase their well-being in life. Global warming will also play a part in driving growth, resulting in warmer summers and more unstable weather and thus increasing Swedes' usage of sun care domestically and abroad on holidays. More Swedes are also expected to take trips abroad seeking sun, due to an increase in household disposable income levels and more stressful lifestyles. Swedes meanwhile generally purchase sun care in Sweden before travelling abroad, as they have a greater trust in brands and products that they have used previously.
