About Pedometers

A pedometer, also known as step counter, is a portable electronic/electromechanical device that counts the number of steps taken by a user while running/jogging/walking. The number of steps is counted by detecting the motion of the user's hip. Pedometers are commonly used by sportsperson. However, they are now popular among morning joggers/walkers, who consider this as a motivator to measure daily exercise. As the distance between the steps varies from person to person, the calibration of pedometer needs standardization. Pedometers are also integrated into portable consumer electronic devices such as iPod, mobile phones, and music players. A mechanical sensor such as MEMS with a software support is used to detect and calculate steps accurately in a pedometer. In general, 10,000 steps in a pedometer is benchmarked for healthy lifestyle and it corresponds to about 5 miles of distance covered.
