More Studies Focusing on Liver-Protective Properties of Turmeric

Portland, OR -- (SBWire) -- 01/05/2015 --The liver is one of the most important organs in the body. However, it is also very susceptible to a wide variety of medical conditions. Scientists are now investigating the use of turmeric to protect the liver from certain conditions.

The University of Maryland Medical Center conducted a study and found that turmeric had liver-protective properties that are highly beneficial to liver health and function. The spice has been used for thousands of years as an ancient remedy for several medical conditions. Today, it is a widely popular pain relief alternative for arthritis.

"Turmeric has an active ingredient known as curcumin, which is believed to be the source of its therapeutic properties. Some researchers believe that those who are susceptible to or suffering from liver problems may experience positive benefits when using the spice," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

According to a controlled animal study published in the Indian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, rats who were treated with turmeric experienced improvements in their liver function. Turmeric is believed to have liver-protective compounds similar to those found in milk thistle and artichoke. Studies suggest that turmeric has therapeutic properties that can significantly help those who are suffering from hepatitis and cirrhosis.

Health professionals suggest that humans are overly exposed to toxins readily found in the air we breathe or food we eat. The liver can only function if it has successfully eliminated these toxins. However, the liver can become stressed and overworked due to the high amounts of toxins in the body.

When the liver is unable to flush out toxins, it can result in the development of certain diseases such as skin conditions and allergies. As a matter of fact, rheumatoid arthritis, which is highly prevalent nowadays, is believed to be caused by toxin overload.

"Turmeric is believed to have the capacity to detoxify the liver. With its therapeutic properties, it is suggested that turmeric could help flush out toxins and regain the health of the liver to allow it to function properly," added O'Sullivan.

Turmeric can be used as a powder and is often incorporated in dishes and beverages. However, it can also be taken in the form of curcumin supplements. It is believed that curcumin supplements are better, as they provide a more concentrated dose of curcumin, the active ingredient found in turmeric. Many also contain a black pepper extract known as BioPerine that encourage nutrient absorption in the body http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI/?ie=UTF8?&m=A3OG9DHZ3GI58O&keywords=turmeric
