Scientists Believe Turmeric Offers a Wellspring of Untapped Health Benefits

Portland, OR -- (SBWire) -- 01/08/2015 --Historical writings from Asia and India show that curcumin has been utilized for centuries as a medicinal, but the information was largely discounted by medical and scientific professionals in the Western world. Today, most people use a curcumin supplement to help relieve arthritis pain, but modern research indicates it has a variety of other health benefits.

"As more research is conducted, evidence for the health benefits of curcumin continues to mount," said VitaBreeze spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

Curcumin is derived from the common spice known as turmeric. It's the substance that has consumers cheering and researchers excited about its ability to affect conditions ranging from acne and depression to cancer. It's used in various parts of the world as a disinfectant, an aid to digestion and to accelerate healing.

Researchers at UCLA and the Chinese University at Hong Kong conducted similar trials with curcumin and even though the research was conducted independently of each other, results were the same. Both groups found that curcumin has the ability to decrease plaque build-up that occurs in Alzheimer's disease by up to 50 percent.

The studies also discovered that the majority of turmeric that's ingested cycles quickly through the digestive system and is eliminated. The results demonstrated the need for curcumin to be combined with a black pepper extract to facilitate absorption, allowing individuals to reap the full benefits.

One of the most interesting results to come from curcumin research is its ability to protect the body from the symptoms of sleep deprivation. Restorative sleep is essential for the mind to work at maximum efficiency and it's critical for the body to repair itself, control appetite and fight the effects of aging. Curcumin significantly decreased mental and physical impairments associated with lack of sleep.

Research results from Virginia's National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases demonstrated that curcumin has promise as an antiviral. In clinical trials, curcumin prevented different types of viruses from spreading and multiplying. It's believed that curcumin interferes with the way the body responds to viral attacks. The findings have the potential to affect viral research ranging from the common cold to AIDS/HIV.

Curcumin is well tolerated and safer than NSAIDs that have potentially deadly side effects. The spice has received the Food and Drug Administration's GRAS (generally regarded as safe) approval. Clinicians recommend a 750mg curcumin supplement that contains a black pepper extract such as BioPerine® for maximum efficacy (www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
