Jonesboro, Arkansas-based Hytrol Conveyors, a designer and manufacturer of advanced conveyor systems, allowed an in-depth examination of why lean manufacturing drives its entire culture. This is the second interview in the series.

Thomas R. Cutler, industrial journalist, interviewed Chris Taylor, Focus Factory manager at Hytrol Conveyor and Tony Sartin, manager of customer care at Hytrol, Taylor explained value stream mapping (VSM) is a process mapping tool that helps companies see and understand the flow of material and information as a product or service makes its way through the value stream. It allows analysis of the current state of operation and help design a future state. Taylor shared, "Value stream mapping allowed me to identify the waste in each process. From that, I developed a plan to eliminate work in process, waste in material handling, overproduction due to forecasting, and much more. VSM opened my eyes to the waste of mass production and allowed me to create a plan to tackle it, one process at a time."
