Selfie Epidemic Driving Plastic Surgery

Columbus, OH -- (SBWire) -- 01/16/2015 --Dr. Michael Sullivan, Facial Plastic Surgeon, Columbus, Ohio reports a striking recent trend, more and more patient's using selfies and social media photos at consultations to point out facial attributes they're dissatisfied with. The  American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery also released a study in 2014 citing 1 in 3 surgeons have seen an increase in procedure requests from patient's aware of their appearance due to social media. This awareness has lead to an increase procedure requests with the most common request being rhinoplasty or nose reshaping. It has also led to an increase in injectables as well as other nonsurgical cosmetic treatments. With advancements in injectables, such as the recent release of Voluma, a filler used to restore mid-face volume, patient's have more nonsurgical options than ever to reverse signs of aging in as little as a 30 minute appointment.

The new year will undoubtedly bring a myriad of photos and likely some selfies too. Dr. Sullivan suggests if you don't like the results of your photos to simply delete them and retake. For patient's who do decide to pursue a cosmetic procedure bringing several photos to the consultation can assist in the discussion of desired aesthetic results. We don't recommend patients bring selfies as they often distort facial appearance due to shadows and lighting. Have a friend snap a few, more natural, photos for you before the consultation or bring in a few reference photos of your desired results.
