Boston, MA -- (SBWire) -- 01/21/2015 --There is no tradition of smoking cigars or cigarillos in Belarus. Cigars and cigarillos remain expensive and unaffordable for the majority of Belarusian consumers, being perceived as luxury products. Awareness of the products is still relatively low among the majority of Belarusians. Some consumers choose cigars and cigarillos only for the purpose of trying something new, but not as a regular part of daily tobacco consumption. Trade representatives state that these products are often chosen by tourists who visit Minsk, the capital of Belarus. Cigars excluding cigarillos are also in growing demand in casinos in Minsk, which increased in number over the review period after they were closed in Moscow.

Competitive Landscape

Cigars are 100% imported products because domestic companies do not produce them. Since 1 January 2008 when the rules for tobacco imports were changed, all tobacco imports have been curried out via just one state-owned company: Belarustorg RUE. The private company DelfiDealing, previously involved in product imports, remains active only in distribution.

Industry Prospects

The category is forecast to grow by a 16% CAGR in volume terms over the forecast period. Growth will be supported by the still low base and low penetration of cigars and cigarillos in Belarus, as well as the increasing number of casinos in Belarus.
