Competitive Landscape

The leader in desktops in the United Arab Emirates is Hewlett-Packard Middle-East, with a 38% share of retail volume sales of desktops in 2013. This leading position is partly thanks to the strong push of the company towards all-in-one PCs, which significantly gained popularity in 2013. This affected the other key players in the category, Lenovo Technology and Dell Computer, which both lost some share in 2013. The Lenovo brand held second position with a share of 18%, whilst Dell was third with a share of 17%. Lenovo?s aggressive pricing and wide-reaching distribution propelled the company over Dell in 2012 for the first time.

Industry Prospects

Tablets is expected to remain the main driver of volume sales of computers over the forecast period. Volume sales of tablets are expected to account for more than half of overall sales of computers by 2018, reaching 1.8 million units. However, value growth will lag behind, as volume demand is expected to continue to be driven by low-cost products. Netbooks is expected to show the steepest growth rate from a small base, driven by the popularity of smaller sized hybrid devices and ultrabooks. Laptops will continue to account for the majority of value sales through the entire forecast period, despite a decline in volume sales.
