Savage, MN -- (SBWire) -- 03/03/2015 --Oral cancer, a dangerous disease not to be taken lightly, is unfortunately usually detected in its advanced stages when treatment is less effective. Dr. Bart Schultz of Smiles of Distinction understands the importance of early detection. He has therefore recently introduced to his patients a new screening device called OralID, which screens for oral cancer.

"OralID's fluorescence technology uses a blue light that helps me and my team members save lives by identifying cancerous and precancerous lesions in their early stages," says Dr. Schultz, "The screening does not involve any pain, discomfort, needles, or other frightening procedures—just a fluorescent blue light."

Once thought to be an older person's disease, a growing number of young people, both male and female, are recently being diagnosed with oral cancer. This is due to the sexually-transmitted Human Papilloma Virus (HPV16), which is a major risk factor for oral cancer. As a result, everyone is susceptible to the disease and should undergo a screening.

The Oral Cancer Foundation is a national public service, non-profit entity designed to reduce suffering and save lives through prevention, education, research, advocacy, and patient support activities. More than 43,000 people in the US were newly diagnosed with oral cancer in 2014. It was the eighth consecutive year in which there was an increase in the rate of occurrence of oral cancer.

A patient who diligently goes for a dental check-up at Smiles of Distinction every six months would automatically be tested for any sign of oral cancer twice a year.
