Study Finds Prevalence of Psoriatic Arthritis Higher Than Previously Thought

Orlando, FL -- (SBWire) -- 03/10/2015 --The number of psoriatic arthritis patients is lesser when compared to other forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. However, it seems that the prevalence of the condition has been completely underestimated.

The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology published a study that found the prevalence of psoriatic arthritis in psoriasis sufferers is higher than previously thought. As a matter of fact, it was found that four of every ten participants in the study were unaware that they had psoriatic arthritis.

"Studies have actually been conducted to investigate the prevalence of psoriatic arthritis among psoriasis patients. Surprisingly, the results showed that it is indeed higher than originally thought," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

In a study conducted by an international team of researchers, it was found that out of 949 patients who had psoriasis, 285 of them, or about 30 percent, had psoriatic arthritis. This disease is characterized by painful and swollen joints, in addition to having scaly rashes.

Studies continued to determine the prevalence of psoriatic arthritis in certain countries, with interesting results. According to research, 18 percent of psoriasis sufferers in Belgium and Canada suffer from the condition, while in Denmark it was 42 percent. In the United States, the number was 36 percent. Of the 285 participants who were diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, it was found that about 41 percent were unaware that they had the condition prior to diagnosis.

The director of rheumatology research at the Swedish Medical Center, Philip J. Mease, MD, headed the study that focuses on the prevalence of psoriatic arthritis in patients suffering from psoriasis. According to Mease, most of the patients do not have the level of awareness necessary for the condition. He added that this often leads to the condition being under-diagnosed or misdiagnosed.

What makes it even more alarming is that when psoriatic arthritis is not diagnosed early or at the right time, it can lead to the development of inflammatory types of arthritis, which can also cause irreversible joint damage. Psoriatic arthritis can be troublesome to deal with, and this is why more and more patients are resorting to different methods to find relief from pain. There are those who use natural alternatives such as curcumin supplements.

This natural alternative is believed to be helpful among arthritis patients, such as those who are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. Curcumin is an active ingredient of a natural spice known as turmeric that is believed to have anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI/?ie=UTF8?&m=A3OG9DHZ3GI58O&keywords=tumeric
