Depression and Anxiety Linked with Tobacco Smoking, iBreathe Responds

Oldham, Manchester -- (SBWire) -- 04/01/2015 --UK e-cigarette supplier, iBreathe, have recently commented on a study provided by The University of London, which reveals smoking tobacco could lead to depression and anxiety, along with the other negative effects generally associated with smoking.

The report determines that tobacco smoking can double the risk of experiencing depression or anxiety, with 18.3 per cent battling with mental health issues. This figure is higher than the amount of non-smokers who suffer, which is 10% and 11.3% who quit the habit for a year or longer.

Professor Robert West, who undertook the research, said, 'Quitting smoking could be the key to improving not only your physical health, but your mental health too.'

The study questioned 6,500 people over the age of 40, and it's the first study to have attempted to link depression rates with smokers, ex-smokers and non-smokers, though a study linking the two has been completed, which this study further backs up.

Medical director for the British Heart Foundation, Dr Mike Knapton, said, 'Instead of aiding people to relax, smoking increases anxiety and tension. When smokers light up, the feeling of reduced stress or relaxation is temporary, and is soon replaced by withdrawal symptoms and cravings.'

Often commenting on industry news, a spokesperson for iBreathe said, 'There are many problems which come from tobacco smoking, and depression and anxiety just add to the list. There is no scientific evidence that e-cigarettes share any of these effects, in fact, we've seen many tobacco smokers moods improve when using e-cigarettes, because they're taking one step away from the addiction for a healthier alternative.

E-cigarettes have helped millions give up smoking, and vaping allows them to enjoy the smoking sensation without any of the negative aspects. We care a great deal about helping people jump from tobacco to vaping, and we hope more will find happiness through giving up an addictive and unhealthy habit.'
