Studies Reveal That Mouth and Other Bacteria May Trigger Rheumatoid Arthritis

Orlando, FL -- (SBWire) -- 04/24/2015 --Many medical conditions have comorbidities, and this is why people are trying their best to stay healthy. However, there are also other factors that can trigger the development of diseases such as arthritic conditions.

Studies have revealed that mouth and other bacteria may trigger rheumatoid arthritis. The belief that inflammatory diseases are caused by gum infections dates back to a century ago. These inflammatory diseases include rheumatoid arthritis and appendicitis.

"Today, the link between oral bacteria and rheumatoid arthritis is once again attracting serious attention. Research has been focusing on the connection between microbes in the lungs, mouth and digestive tract and the immune system," explained VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson Michelle O'Sullivan.

Trillions of bacteria called microbiota that dwell inside the body are generally protective and beneficial. However, in certain circumstances they can also lead to the development of auto-inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Jose Scher, MD, the director of the Microbiome Center for Rheumatology and Autoimmunity at the New York University Langone Medical Center Hospital for Joint Diseases, has stated that the bacteria in the human body can help us and in return we provide them food and other nutrients. However, when the bacterial communities' relative composition has been altered, it can trigger the immune system to target the body's own tissues. Dr. Scher believes that this is true in animal models.

This may also be true for human studies. A great deal of research has been conducted and it was found that there definitely seems to be an association between rheumatoid arthritis and the germs that cause periodontal disease.

The Journal of Periodontology published a report from researchers at Case Western Reserve University that revealed patients suffering from severe arthritis had less swelling and pain when they were treated for gum disease alongside their arthritis medications. The patients also experienced improvement in their overall health condition after their treatments.

In 2010, an epidemiological study was conducted by the Journal of Periodontology where it was found that rheumatoid arthritis patients suffered from more severe periodontal disease and were also twice as likely to have gum disease as those without rheumatoid arthritis. A 2013 study revealed that patients who were newly diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis were more likely to have antibodies to a bacterium known as Porphyromonas gingivalis that causes gum disease.

Experts suggest that people should consider these studies and improve their oral hygiene. This is one of the best ways to reduce their risk for inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Natural alternatives such as glucosamine supplements may also help lower the risk of inflammation. Supplements containing other ingredients such as chondroitin, MSM and turmeric are often recommended by experts (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
