The Lehigh Valley Planning Commission officials, who say the region had better get ready for its gushing flow of truck traffic to nearly double by 2040. That growth has prompted the Planning Commission to launch a freight study that officials hope will map out where future highway and bridge dollars should be committed and which Valley municipalities should prepare for the inescapable — trucks and more trucks. The early research predicts massive growth in freight traffic — particularly by truck. Its projections show total freight tonnage that was 40.8 million in 2011 will increase to 80.2 million by 2040.
