Albany, NY -- (SBWire) -- 06/23/2015 --Terrestrial laser scanning has emerged as a revolutionary surveying and geometrics technology. Presently, 3-D terrestrial laser scanning is used as a standard tool for various applications that demands high accuracy in position and 3D modeling. Terrestrial laser scanning generates high resolution images with dense data points and high efficiency that comprises all the aspects of data collection and data processing in a periodic manner.

In the past decade, use of an advanced surveying technologies and techniques has been carried out in numerous applications. Widely used of these technologies are the 3D terrestrial laser scanning and the associated techniques for data processing and representation. Laser scanning is also utilized in the airborne laser scanning and terrestrial applications as well. The airborne laser scanning is also called as Light detection and Ranging (LiDAR). However, ALS systems have been used in the late 1970s it usage was confined due to lack of cost efficiency and complexity of the system. In the middle of the 1990s and after the advanced direct geo referencing system has been implemented the Global Positioning System and the Inertial Navigation System were used. LiDAR become a standard tool for generating accurate measurements of Digital Terrain Models and Digital Elevation Models.

Since its early utilization in 2000's it's fully developed and operational. Platforms are used nowadays for implementation of 3D TLS in numerous applications. These include tunneling, deformation surveys, classification of complex natural scenes, heritage and historic recordings, documentation of industrial sites and engineering projects, and engineering construction surveys. Remarkable advantage of using 3D Terrestrial laser scanning in the numerous applications shows the ability of successfully obtaining accurate 3D points. Moreover, laser scanners have potential for obtaining accurate and precise data in harsh and difficult conditions such as environmentally hazardous areas or remote areas. Performing surveys in such areas becomes extremely difficult and inaccurate at the same time if conventional surveying techniques such as total stations are used. Utilizing Terrestrial laser scanning, easy and fast acquisition of complex data from objects can be obtained where the scanner records the high range intensity of the returning signal and the scan angle of each measurement. Thereby, each and every point is clearly described in a 3D spherical coordinate system with the scanner in the origin.

Terrestrial laser scanning systems are used in surveying application they can be broadly categorized into two segments. The first type is known as time of flight scanners, also called as pulse based scanners or laser range finders. Second type is known as phase shift scanners. The pulse based scanners contains a laser diode that transmits a pulsed laser beam which is reflected off the scanned object. Using accurate timing, a sensor calculates the time for the optical pulse to travel to and from the reflected surface.

Classification of terrestrial laser scanners is difficult to be carried out. There are various possibilities to do this, either through the measurement principle or through the technical specifications achieved. In first method, there is no universal laser scanner for all conceivable applications. Some scanners are suitable for indoor use and medium ranges while other scanners are used for outdoor use with long ranges. Dependent on the application the suited laser scanner has to be selected.

Some of the key companies in the business of terrestrial laser scanning are Blomasa, GIM International, Merrett Survey, RIEGL Laser Measurement Systems GmbH and Harvey-Lynch, Inc. among others.
