The Arthritis Foundation Provides Pertinent Information on How Fat Affects Arthritis

Orlando, FL -- (SBWire) -- 07/06/2015 --Being overweight or obese has long been known to increase a person's risk for a wide variety of ailments. However, it doesn't only cause certain diseases, but also makes the existing ones, such as arthritis, worse.

The Arthritis Foundation has provided some pertinent information about how fat affects arthritis. According to research, obesity or being overweight can make gout, fibromyalgia, arthritis, lupus and other joint diseases worse.

"It is almost always that people associate obesity with conditions such as diabetes or heart disease, which are conditions that have excess weight as one of the major risk factors. However, arthritis, too, can be caused by obesity," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or CDC, there is one in three obese individuals who is diagnosed with arthritis. There are also two out of three people in the United States who are diagnosed with arthritis and who are either obese or overweight.

There are several ways that fat affects arthritis and good reasons why losing weight is highly beneficial. Fat and osteoarthritis are connected mainly because excess weight usually puts more stress in the joints, which results in wear and tear. Rheumatoid arthritis and fat are also associated due to the inflammatory chemicals present in the latter.

There is an estimated number of 1.5 million people in the United States who have rheumatoid arthritis. This arthritic condition produces inflammation and leads to joint pain and deterioration. Inflammatory chemicals, such as adipokines, are known to promote inflammation.

Jon Giles, M.D., assistant professor of medicine from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in the division of rheumatology, believes that adipokines are not a good thing in rheumatoid arthritis patients. People should make sure that they watch their diet and exercise regularly.

Fat is not just associated with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, but also gout, which is a form of inflammatory arthritis. Studies showed that around 70 percent of individuals with gout are overweight while 14 percent are obese. Obesity can significantly increase a person's risk for the condition. Being overweight or obese makes a patient ten times more susceptible to developing gout than someone who do not have excess weight.

The thing about gout is that sufferers can make some small changes in their diet and lifestyle, which could make a big difference. Gout patients even have more control on their condition than those with rheumatoid arthritis.

Individuals with arthritic conditions often use natural alternatives such as curcumin supplements. Curcumin is the key ingredient of a powerful ancient spice known as turmeric. This natural alternative is believed to be helpful in providing pain relief among arthritis sufferers (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/product-reviews/B00JA4TLTI).
