Oklahoma City, OK -- (SBWire) -- 07/23/2015 --MetroFit has enacted a major health initiative in an effort to keep employees, students and the community as a whole, as healthy as possible. The Wellness Department of Metro Tech was given a grant of $35,000 from the Oklahoma City Community Foundation Wellness Initiative Grant Program for the betterment of the community.

The grant was used for the specific purpose of implementing the MetroFit Wellness Community OutReach program, which addresses both the physical and mental needs of Oklahoma City, along with Metro Tech employees and students.

This health initiative has gained a lot of momentum very quickly with a number of different health-conscious events and activities that were created for the explicit purpose of keeping Metro Tech employees and students informed and active for the sake of their overall health.

Employees and students take a 15-minute walk around their campus to relax and decompress from their workdays every Monday and Friday at 9:15 am and 2 pm respectively. The goal of this regular activity is to improve the mental and physical health of students and employees.

Metro Tech has partnered with Integris to bring Pam Patty, a registered dietician, to the campus for a series of healthy food demonstrations. These demonstrations are given once each month and they are for employees and students who want to learn how to cook healthier meals.

Some of the different meals that are demonstrated include chili, watermelon salsa, and breakfast burritos. MetroFit offers a number of free fitness classes for the Oklahoma City community, including metabolic fitness, Tai Chi, yoga, line dancing, and more. There is also a weight loss class sponsored by Integris Health for the benefit of those in the community who want to lose weight but are struggling to do so on their own.

It is the ultimate goal of MetroFit to help employees and students, as well as the community at large, to improve their overall mental and physical health through regular exercise and a variety of classes that are meant to keep community members active and informed.

These classes are completely free to register, some of which last 12 weeks, while the weight loss class lasts only 8 weeks. This health initiative has become increasingly popular with students and employees alike. Although these activities and demonstrations are strictly voluntary, a great number of people have participated in them out of a desire for better overall health.
