Paramus, NJ -- (SBWire) -- 07/23/2015 --Life Source Services hospice, a New Jersey hospice provider located within Bergen Regional Medical Center, was recently honored by receiving an annual award given by the New Jersey Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Life Source Services hospice volunteer Deborah Massey was the recipient of the 2015 NJHPCO's Spirit of Hospice Volunteer Award.

Ms. Massey has served as a bedside companion and New Jersey hospice volunteer with Life Source Services hospice for over five years. Although she works for a Fortune 500 company and is frequently involved with international travel, she manages to find time for weekly patient visits. Ms. Massey views her weekly visits as an anchor to her week and a source of rejuvenation. As a bedside visitor, Ms. Massey provides dying patients and their families with support, a good listening ear, and companionship. Ms. Massey is frequently accompanied by her therapy dog, Ellie, a friendly Dalmatian who provides a unique hospice service to non-verbal patients who enjoy the presence of a warm and loving animal.

Ms. Massey has gained as much from her volunteer experience at Life Source Services hospice as she has given. She stated:

"I've come to realize that it takes very little to put a smile on someone's face. Simple things like holding someone's hand, a shoulder message, or reading a story takes very little, yet it can bring comfort and brighten someone's day. I've learned a lot about myself. I've learned that I have more patience than I thought I had, and more importantly, I've also learned to put things into proper perspective. I've been touched by many of the residents I wish could have known for a longer period of time."
