Phoenix, AZ -- (SBWire) -- 08/07/2015 --Not all of us could have faced the conditions confronted by Dr. Sakena Yacoobi, when she returned from the US to the Afghan refugee camps in Pakistan in 1990. Nor would we have had the nerve to establish 80 underground schools under the Taliban, to provide health services and continue to grow. To learn the story behind the story, Beth Green will be interviewing Sakena Yacoobi on Beth's radio show, InsideOut: The Inner Revolution on Thursday, August 6, 3-4 pm, Pacific Time on VoiceAmerica, Variety Channel. Sakena will be sharing how she and her courageous band managed to stand up to death threats and repression and how they have been able to accomplish so much for millions of Afghans. She will also share with listeners the real conditions of Afghanistan today.

"Most of us are familiar with the anguish of Afghan women," says host Beth Green, "but few of us see their courage. This story tells it all."

Born in Afghanistan, Dr. Sakena Yacoobi came to the US in the 1970s to study biological sciences and public health. In 1990, she left the United States to work with the 7.5 million refugees in Pakistan who needed education and health services. While there, she founded the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL) in 1995, which continued to work with the refugees. Sakena was on the verge of starting programs in Afghanistan itself when the Taliban took over the national government and decimated women's rights. Sakena and her band did not give up. Despite the dangers in Afghanistan, they supported health programs for women, children and the poor and even managed to establish 80 underground home schools. In 2002, with the fall of the Taliban, AIL established its offices in Afghanistan itself, and it has provided health, education and community-building services to millions of Afghans.

And it hasn't stopped there. AIL was the first organization to offer human rights and leadership training to Afghan women. And now they are hosting large conferences on love and forgiveness around Afghanistan, the first of their kind. The events are centered on the poetry of Rumi and use music, times of reflection, speakers and small group sessions to teach peace and living in harmony and to educate people about human rights and good citizenship. And now Sakena has founded Radio Meraj, a private radio station in Herat, Afghanistan.

"Sakena's amazing," says host Beth Green. "She has such deep compassion for suffering and an unwavering belief in people. She has been recognized and honored around the world, and I feel very honored that she'll be joining us on our show. She'll be sharing her journey with us, and we hope that more people can learn about this courageous woman and the other undaunted Afghans who have faced tyranny and are rebuilding their nation. It's inspiring."
