Oklahoma City, OK -- (SBWire) -- 09/09/2015 --A total of 14 students from the Health Career Center travelled all the way to Anaheim, CA to attend the Future Health Professionals (HOSA) National Leadership Conference and Competition.

These students, consisting of seven adults and seven high school students, competed against other health students who came from all over the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada. HCC Biomedical Academy teacher Karen Upton and HCC Radiology teacher Alison Beckner served as advisors for these students on their trip to the conference and competition in Anaheim. The students managed to place top 10 in a number of different categories.

In order to qualify for the conference, these students competed at the district and state level of their Career and Technology Student Organizations (CTSO). The district and the Metro Tech Foundation funded this student trip to the national competition.

Cindy Friedman, who is the Foundation Director, stated that district support was responsible for providing this group of students and many others with the ability to travel to places and have experiences they normally would not get the chance to.

The foundation gives debit cards to each student participating in the competition that can be used to cover the cost of rent or any bills they have while they are not working to compete in the national competition, or other activities they engage in while on their trip.

Some of the students from this Oklahoma trade school that placed at the national competition were Alondra Rojo, Bianka Tobias, Yancy Torres, Jessica Cifuentes, and Evelin Longoria. Eve Conner-Gottlieb and Tracy George both placed 6th for the Adult Health Education portion of the competition.

The trip to this national conference and competition is a yearly event that only a select number of students get to go on. Each of the students who went to the national competition was chosen because of their outstanding academic accomplishments respectively. The Health Careers Center boasts a number of talented and motivated students who are extremely passionate about learning and were able to go on this trip because of the Metro Tech Foundation.

The school was established in 1979 by a vote of the people to serve Oklahoma City in providing career and technology education (CTE). Metro Tech provides full-time career majors for high school and adult students. High school students receive credit toward high school graduation.
