Veteran-Owned Manufacturer of American-Made Walking Canes Becomes a Finalist in the Martha Stewart American Made Awards

Kalamazoo, MI -- (SBWire) -- 10/02/2015 --College Canes, a small family business dedicated to offering a unique and premium line of American made walking canes, announced today it has placed as a Finalist in the prestigious 2015 Martha Stewart American Made Awards.

College Canes stands out from the cheap imports in the walking cane market by striving to meet the need for individuality and style with its unique line of Collegiate walking canes. Beyond providing a quality product, the company is also dedicated to responsible manufacturing. College Canes is one of the few manufacturers that make up the 1% of cane manufacturers in the USA. The aluminum is extruded and coated in a facility in Detroit, Michigan through a proprietary anodizing process. The canes then are assembled through the Compensated Work Therapy Program, which helps veterans in need, through the VA hospital. In addition, two percent of their Mil-Spec Canes sales are donated to the veterans through the Fisher House Foundation.

The company has placed as a Finalist in the Style and Accessories category. Each year, the editors at Martha Stewart Living spotlight the next generation of great American makers through the Martha Stewart American Made Awards, honoring the entrepreneurs, artisans, and small-business owners who are pioneering new industries and improving local communities. In addition to the Martha Stewart American Made honorees selected by Martha and her panel of 16 esteemed judges, one Audience Choice Winner will be chosen by the audience.

About College Canes
Pharm Spec, the manufacturing arm of College Canes, is located in the country outside of Kalamazoo, MI. They currently own a 4,000 square foot, 1920's school house that will be re-purposed into creative office space in the next 2 years, and a 10,000 square foot warehouse on the same piece of land. In an effort to revitalize the area, the cane parts are coated in a Detroit neighborhood that has been devastated by the auto industry. They also contract with the VA Hospital in Battle Creek, MI for assembly. This provides jobs to veterans that are in need or transitioning to the work force from the military. They incorporate the principles of Quality, Integrity, and Honesty in every step of their manufacturing and supply chain processes.
