A drug originally designed to fight HIV may prevent genital herpes. (1)

A study showed that the annual genital herpes (HSV-2) infection rate among women dropped by more than ten percent (10%) when they used a topical gel containing the drug tenofovir. The drug was originally designed to help prevent HIV infection. Its safety and efficacy is still being tested for use in genital herpes prevention, and is not approved for sale to the public. However, Dr. Salim Abdool Karim said that "If the gel were to be approved and manufactured, and if a woman was concerned about acquiring herpes simplex virus type 2, this would be the best protection available. The problem is, right now it's not available. And taking tenofovir tablets instead of the gel doesn't have the same benefit. You see some protection with tablets, but the levels of protection are much lower." (1) Dr. Karim is from the the Centre for the AIDS Program of Research in South Africa.

The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) reminds the public that although the Tenofovir gel seems promising, as Dr.Karim noted, it is not yet approved for use. Developing an effective product with FDA approval takes time. Until this topical anti-herpes gel is FDA approved, the CBCD recommends that infected individuals take Gene-Eden-VIR, which is an HSV-2 remedy that is backed by clinical studies.

The formula of Gene-Eden-VIR was tested by Hanan Polansky and Edan Itzkovitz from the Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) in two clinical studies that followed FDA guidelines. The studies showed that the Gene-Eden-VIR formula is effective against the HSV-1 and HSV-2 viruses, and other herpes viruses. The clinical studies were published in the peer reviewed, medical journal Pharmacology & Pharmacy, the first, in a special edition on Advances in Antiviral Drugs. Study authors wrote that, "individuals infected with the (HSV-1 and other viruses)…reported a safe decrease in their symptoms following treatment with Gene-Eden-VIR." What treatments are currently available for those infected with the herpes virus?

"Two types of antiviral treatments against HSV are available: topical and oral. The treatments include penciclovir, acyclovir, famciclovir, and valaciclovir. However, their effectiveness is limited. For instance, a meta-analysis of five placebo-controlled and two dose comparison studies evaluated the effect of aciclovir, famciclovir or valaciclovir on symptoms. The meta-analysis showed that oral antiviral therapy decreases the duration and the associated pain of an outbreak by merely one day." (2)

In light of this evidence, the CBCD recommends that HSV infected individuals take Gene-Eden-VIR. This natural product does not prevent herpes infection, and is not a cure for herpes. The herpes virus establishes a life-long infection and there are no drugs or natural remedies that completely remove the virus from the body.
