Stanthorpe, Australia -- (SBWire) -- 12/03/2015 --The Granite Belt Arboretum, located in Queensland, Australia, is a secluded space for people to regroup, refresh and rejuvenate. Now, the organization hopes to establish a living tree zoo in the high altitude and cool climate region of Queensland known as the Granite Belt.

The group plans to import tissue culture from the coast redwood, Sequoia sempervirens, located in the Archangel Tree Archive in the United States.  The material will be shipped from an American laboratory and will be placed in Australian quarantine prior to being planted in the Granite Belt Arboretum.  The goals is to have 200 trees in the ground at the end of the project.

According to the sponsors, "This is a global preservation project to protect these endangered and magnificent trees in a living library. We believe these clones of ancient redwoods are genetically geared for resilience and as such, we want to participate in the preservation of these iconic forest dwellers. Their growth rate has been noted at up to 10 feet or 3 metres per year in the right microclimate, and we know our skills and experience and dedication will provide the best environment for them. The clones of 4,000 year old Californian Coast Redwoods will form the foundation of the Granite Belt Arboretum. We want other people to experience the joy of an evergreen forest of ancient majestic trees."

Californian coast redwoods are known for their pest-resistance and fire-retardant properties.  They have thick bark and high levels of tannin, which helps them repel predators.  They also have the ability to store carbon at three times more than any other forest tree.

The IndieGoGo campaign, located at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/granite-belt-arboretum-australia#/, offers pledge levels from $25 to $10,000, with perks ranging from a leather notebook cover and notepad with the Granite Belt Arboretum Australia logo to an arboretum tour of the Granite Belt region.  For more information on specific pledge levels and associated perks, visit the IndieGoGo page.
