Researchers Investigate the Effects of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation on Knee Osteoarthritis

Orlando, FL -- (SBWire) -- 01/06/2016 --Today, there are millions of individuals who are suffering from knee osteoarthritis. The good news is that there are several treatment options believed to be helpful among individuals who suffer from the condition.

Researchers investigate the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on knee osteoarthritis. Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation (TENS) is a popular pain relief solution for individuals who suffer from the condition. NMES, which is a form of transcutaneous electrical stimulation, is believed to be an effective remedy in fighting the symptoms of knee osteoarthritis.

"There are many remedies believed to be helpful for knee osteoarthritis symptoms such as glucosamine supplements," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

The Clinical Rheumatology featured a study that involved a group of 50 female individuals diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knee. The study revealed that the participants experienced improvements in their mobility and function as well as pain and stiffness relief after a four-week program of electrical stimulation. These positive results are also experienced by sufferers who engaged in a four-week exercise program.

The NMES is believed to be an ideal alternative for individuals with knee osteoarthritis who are unable to regularly exercise. Studies revealed that electrical stimulation was beneficial among older patients, especially in the reduction of knee pain levels as well as the increase in the quadriceps muscle strength.

In a recent U.S.-based study, the researchers enrolled 48 male and 109 female participants with moderate-to-severe knee osteoarthritis. The subjects were made to use an electric stimulation device for six to ten hours on a daily basis.

It was found that the need for surgery reduced among 62 percent of the subjects who wore the FDA-approved electrical stimulation device. They even delayed their knee joint replacement appointment for four years. On the other hand, only 7 percent of the subjects who did not use the device experienced some improvements.

Medications and treatments such as the NMES are considered to be extremely popular in helping osteoarthritis sufferers. However, more and more sufferers are looking for some natural means to fight pain and improve the overall quality of their life. One reason is that the use of medications, such as pain relief drugs, has been associated with various side effects. Some of these side effects can be extremely detrimental to overall health on a long-term basis.

One of the most popular natural remedies for arthritic conditions such as arthritis is glucosamine. Glucosamine is believed to help repair the joint cartilage and significantly improve overall joint health. Glucosamine supplements are believed to be safer than pharmaceutical drugs, and have the ability to provide remarkable results (amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
