Mouth Bacteria a Risk Factor of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Orlando, FL -- (SBWire) -- 01/19/2016 --Today, more and more people are taking various measures necessary to improve their immunity against ailments. There are certain steps to reduce one's risk of certain conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. In order to do this, people need to learn about some risk factors of the condition.

Mouth bacteria are believed to be a risk factor of rheumatoid arthritis. Many centuries ago, it was already suspected that gum infections could be caused by inflammatory diseases, which includes appendicitis and rheumatoid arthritis.

It is believed that there is a link between the immune system and the microbes in the mouth, lungs, and digestive tract. Microbiota, which pertains to trillions of bacteria, lives inside the body, and is generally beneficial and protective by nature. Unfortunately, there are circumstances that can turn this into auto inflammatory disorders, which include rheumatoid arthritis.

Jose Scher, M.D., the director of the Microbiome center for Rheumatology and Autoimmunity at the Langone Medical center Hospital, New York University, states that bacteria help the human body as we nourish them with nutrients and food. However, when there are changes in the relative composition of the bacterial communities, it encourages the immune system to attack its own tissues.

The Journal of Periodontology features a report made by the Case Western Reserve University researchers. It reveals that individuals with severe arthritis experience a reduction in pain and swelling once they take medications for gum disease, in addition to the pharmaceutical drugs used for arthritis.

An epidemiological study in 2010 also conducted by the Journal of Periodontology reveals that individuals with rheumatoid arthritis suffered from a more serious periodontal disease. There were also twice more susceptible to gum disease than the individuals with no rheumatoid arthritis.

In 2013, a study also revealed that individuals who were diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis were more susceptible to having a bacterium called Porphyromonas gingivalis, which leads to gum disease.

According to experts, it is imperative that sufferers should practice oral hygiene to reduce the mouth bacteria and other complications. There are natural remedies also available to reduce the negative impact of arthritic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

The use of glucosamine, for instance, has been popular over the years among arthritis sufferers. Glucosamine is believed to be helpful in repairing the cartilage and protecting the overall health of the joints. Most of the best glucosamine supplements in the market contain other natural ingredients such as turmeric, chondroitin, and MSM (amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
