Tarrytown, NY -- (SBWire) -- 01/20/2016 --The Life Support Technologies group (LST) announces its 2016 Hyperbaric Medicine courses, accredited by the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) and the National Board of Diving & Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NDBHMT).

LST will be running the 40-hour course in 2016 at several of its hospital partner facilities around the NY tri-state region: Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, NY, February 26 – March 1; Virtua Hospital, Voorhees, NJ, April 14-18; Nassau University Medical Center, East Meadow, NY, September 23-27. The accredited courses are aimed at physicians and allied health professionals, though participation is open to all. The LST course meets the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)-mandated educational guidelines for hyperbaric education; it provides the foundation for Medical Doctors (MD), Doctors of Orthopedics (DO), Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPM), Doctors of Philosophy (PhD), Physician Assistants (PA), Nurse Practitioners (NP), Bachelor of Science/Nursing, Registered Nurses (RN), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRT), Paramedics (EMT-P), Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), Hyperbaric Technicians (HT), and other clinical professional who are either working in, or planning to enter, the field of Hyperbaric Medicine. The course is a pathway toward achieving professional certification in this growing field. Currently, in the United States, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services approve hyperbaric treatment for fifteen (15) medical indications. Most commercial insurance carriers follow CMS guidelines for hyperbaric treatment reimbursement.

Medical Doctors and Doctors of Orthopedics who attend and participate in the entire course are awarded 40 AMA, PRA CATEGORY 1 Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits, which are granted by the UHMS. Allied health professionals (including DPM, PhD, NP, PA, Paramedic, EMT, RN, LPN, RT, and RRT) who attend and participate in the entire course are awarded 40 Continuing Education Units, which are granted by the NBDHMT.

DPM, NP and PA degree holders who need CMEs can present their Certification Boards with a Letter of Attendance granted by the UHMS.

The first LST course was developed in partnership with the late Eric P. Kindwall, M.D., author/editor of several prominent books, including Hyperbaric Medicine Procedures: The Kindwall HBO Handbook, first published in 1970 and now in its ninth edition, and Hyperbaric Medicine Practice (Eric P Kindwall, MD, and Harry T Whelan, MD, eds.), now in its 3rd edition, that continue to be used for medical training. Considered by many to be the "Father of Hyperbaric Medicine," Dr. Kindwall was LST's original Course Director.

Hyperbaric Medical treatment involves putting a patient in a specially designed pressure vessel known as a hyperbaric chamber that can be pressurized greater than atmospheric pressure. The patient breathes 100% oxygen while under increased pressure. Monoplace hyperbaric chambers are the most common and are designed to treat one patient at a time. Multiplace chambers are purpose-built and can accommodate as many patients as they are built for. Hyperbaric chamber construction standards are established and published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Pressure Vessel for Human Occupancy (PVHO) Committee. Standards for in-hospital use of high-pressure oxygen and other gases -- and for all aspects of safety regarding in-hospital use of hyperbaric chambers -- are covered by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in their manual titled "NPFA-99: Health Care Facilities Code".
