Dutch Study Reveals RA Sufferers Live a Better Quality of Life Than Decades Ago

Orlando, FL -- (SBWire) -- 01/25/2016 --Pain and inflammation are the most common and debilitating symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis that are making the lives of sufferers extremely challenging. They are being subjected to physical limitations that hinder them from doing their daily routines or working. While there has not been any cure for the condition, there is still some good news associated with it.

A Dutch study reveals sufferers live a better quality of life than decades ago. The researchers from the Netherlands monitored 1,100 RA sufferers from 1990 to 2011. They believe that the improvement in the perspective and quality of life of the sufferers could be attributed to the positive effects of earlier diagnosis and aggressive medications.

Cecil Overman is the lead author of the study, which was recently published in the Arthritis Care & Research. Overman is also a doctoral candidate at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Overman and her colleagues aimed at determining whether the improved arthritis treatments over the last 20 years have resulted in better health for the sufferers.

It was found that the participants experienced an improvement in their physical ability and mood as the study progressed over time. They suggested that the improvements were probably due to the improved treatments used by the sufferers.

The improved pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for the condition are believed to be effective in keeping sufferers physically active and have a positive outlook in life.

Rheumatoid arthritis sufferers are believed to be more susceptible to experiencing psychological stress, including anxiety and depression. The good news is that healthcare professionals have been trying to focus on not just curing the disease, but also improving the quality of life of sufferers.

According to Janice McInnes, a physical therapist and clinical supervisor of rehabilitation services at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, the improvements experienced by healthcare providers and arthritis sufferers in her institution confirms the findings of the Dutch study.

Today, there are many remedies for the condition. While pain relief drugs are still used for the condition, more and more arthritis sufferers are turning to the use of natural alternatives such as glucosamine supplements.

There has been a widespread scare of the use of pain relief drugs among arthritis sufferers, and this is due to the side effects associated with its use. Glucosamine supplements are believed to be an excellent natural alternative to pain relief drugs. They are thought to be effective and safe to use too since they do not cause side effects (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4/).
