The syndrome is characterized by the inability of the hematopoietic cells produced in the bone marrow to attain maturity. Cytological dysplasia is a common feature of the syndrome, progressing to acute myeloid leukemia in about 30% of individuals with myelodysplastic syndrome. The disease is age-related, mostly affecting people aged 60 and above. Smoking, exposure to radiation, contact with chemicals such as benzene, genetic mutations, and chemotherapy can cause myelodysplastic syndrome.
