The National Trust Begins Huge Effort to Restore Period Features at Clandon Park
Wandsworth, London -- (SBWire) -- 02/08/2016 --Recent reports have drawn attention to efforts to repair and revitalise the stately home Clandon Park, located near Guilford in Surrey, which was badly damaged in April 2015 following a catastrophic fire. It is thought that up to 95% of the house was damaged by the flames. Extensive planning and funding for the work has been needed; hence why it has taken many months to reach this stage. The National Trust is overseeing the restoration and is expected to place particular emphasis on restoring the elegant period features, such as ceiling-work and fireplaces. Keen to comment on this was Stonewoods, a prime provider of fireplaces and fittings, with an extensive knowledge of antiques.
Clandon Park, in its prime, was a property recognised for its attractive interiors. It housed a large collection of porcelain, textiles and paintings – many of which were lost to the fire. No one was hurt in the incident, but the cost to what was once known as one of the UK's finest Palladian mansions has been considerable. In turn, extensive research into Palladian features has been required by those completing the restoration. Palladian designs are recognised for their elegance, and are often imitated in people's front rooms and lounges. Stonewoods provided this reflection:
"We wish the National Trust all the best in their work on the property. The project shows the public passion and recognition for period designs; and once the property is restored, it is likely to be a showcase of powerful design. A big focus is on the antique features and fireplaces – something we see as important also here at Stonewoods."
