Packaging at Threat from EU Circular Plans

Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire -- (SBWire) -- 05/25/2016 --Bold new legislative proposals from the European Commission (EC) have been issued to alleviate waste issues and push Europe towards a circular economy to ensure sustainable avenues grow and increase competitiveness as well as generation of hundreds of new jobs.

The entire proposal is intended to improve the entire process of production and waste management as well as delivering a timeline for desired actions to be completed. Through improved recycling and re-use, the proposal is intended to assist in giving longer product life cycles by reducing waste and maximising re-use and presents an alternative to a linear economy. However, the proposal has come under fire from critics who claim that whilst the current Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD) have regulations for recycling; the current EU proposal simply covers a preparation for use initiative which is deemed inadequate for purpose.

A spokesperson for Sontex commented "The packaging industry continually strives to operate in line with current environmental targets and to operate green practices, especially with regards to recycling and waste management; however clear guidelines are needed to ensure conformity and the new proposal does not give the specifics required by many businesses in the packaging industry. The proposal should clearly outline the practices to follow to be in line with regulations."
