Preliminary Findings in Some Studies Reveal Turmeric May Have Anti-Obesity Potential

Orlando, FL -- (SBWire) -- 07/28/2016 --Obesity is considered as a national epidemic in certain parts of the world. Carrying extra weight may not just decrease the mobility and productivity of people, but may impact their overall quality of life. The good news is that there is a natural alternative believed to be helpful in fighting the condition.

Preliminary findings in some studies reveal the anti-obesity potential of turmeric. This ancient spice has a deep yellow-orange color and potent taste. It is believed to offer a myriad of health benefits. In traditional Chinese and Ayurveda medicine, turmeric has been used for thousands of years as a natural alternative for a range of ailments. A majority of its potentially beneficial attributes are thought to come from its phytochemical called curcumin.

"Today, curcumin supplements are widely available in the market," said Divine Bounty spokesperson, Melissa Scott.

Curcumin contains a variety of unique substances that are believed by some to contain antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. It can be consumed through the use of turmeric powder or curcumin supplementation.

Obesity causes low-grade inflammation in the body, which increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic ailments. In a review published in the European Journal of Nutrition, it was found that curcumin's antioxidant properties may have the potential ability to suppress inflammatory messaging in muscle, fat, and pancreatic cells as well as other types of cells.

This action is believed to curb insulin resistance, high cholesterol levels, high blood sugar, and other metabolic conditions that results from obesity. It is believed that when the body is not fighting too much inflammation, it can be easier to concentrate on weight loss.

In 2009, a study was performed at the Tufts University that indicated that curcumin has the potential ability to suppress the growth of fat tissue in mice. Weight gain triggers the expansion of the fat tissue upon the formation of new blood vessels. The curcumin-supplemented mice were not able to have the blood vessel formation, and thus, they had less fat gain. Both of the groups of mice in the study had high-fat diets.

Turmeric powder can be added in a wide range of dishes and beverages. It is an excellent addition to salads, grilled meats, and sauces, as well as teas. There are also curcumin supplements available. Individuals who want to lose weight may want to consider the use of these supplements to potentially fight inflammation and possibly reduce the expansion of fat cells. Most of the more notable curcumin supplements available on the market contain a black pepper extract called piperine, which is a bioavailability-enhancing ingredient.
