Consumers Are Not Completely Defenseless Against RFID Thieves
Manchester, NH -- (SBWire) -- 08/11/2016 --The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has been introduced to credit card owners and financing institutions years ago. While fraudsters are finding some methods to make their way to the pockets of consumers, there are things that card holders can do to protect themselves from these crooks.
Consumers are not completely defenseless against RFID thieves. The RFID chips are small chips that utilize wireless radio frequency electro-magnetic fields to transmit data. These chips can be found in pet finders, credit cards, passports, easy-passes, hospitals, retail stores, and transportation payments.
The RFID chips are installed in objects and areas where their information can be scanned and read quickly for identification. These chips are usually equipped with personal, sensitive information, which if stolen could be used for fraudulent purposes.
Nowadays, criminals use devices that can easily scan, decode, and capture information, which is then used for malicious, illegal purposes. The RFID chips in passports, for instance, contain details such as the name, place of birth, date of birth, height, weight, address, social security number, and eye color.
When the data is obtained from the chip, it can be used to open a credit card, make a new one, book a flight, or make purchases.
Banking institutions and governments are resorting to excessive measures to prevent RFID theft. Unfortunately, there are credit card readers scattered in the international market today. These devices can even be purchased for as low as $50.
Crooks, even the most inexperienced ones, can simply purchase these devices in just a matter of clicks. This type of device typically stores information such as expiration date, credit card number, and CCV number.
One the information has been stored, it is then used by fraudsters to purchase items and make financial transactions.
Today, there is an estimated number of 100 million RFID enabled cards in the system. The bad news is that card skimming devices have also become more sophisticated and available.
There are even criminals who use certain types of advanced technology to increase the distance in which the skimming device can scan the card. There have even been reports that reveal card skimming devices can scan within 20-30 inches distance.
The good news is that there are products such as the RFID blocking sleeves available that consumers can use to increase their protection against thieves. These sleeves can block card skimming devices from obtained information from credit cards, regardless of how close in distance the victim and thief is.
