HealthyWiser News: Should Spectators Worry About Water Safety in the Rio Olympics?

White Plains, NY -- (SBWire) -- 08/19/2016 --Controversies have faced some host countries for the Olympics. From the human right issues before the Beijing 2008 Olympics began to the health risks that the Rio 2016 Olympics are posting, the world is watching. Two of these issues in Brazil are the Zika virus and the safety of the water systems in the area.

Recent reports stated that the waters in Rio showed "inputs of untreated sewage" in the more urban locations.

"The [World Health Organization] said that the quality of the water varied from area to area but Copacabana beach was safe enough for open water marathon swimmers. Swimmers are likely to swallow water while competing but they are not at risk because the levels of bacteria such as E. coli are low enough. Rowers and canoeists will compete on the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon and the sailing will take place at Marina da Glória in Guanabara Bay," a report on Express stated.

The report also mentioned that some of the waters did not pass standards in Brazil. They are reportedly posing threats to the athletes competing in the Games.

Spectators from around the world came to Brazil to witness the Olympics. The Games have opened and are now being held. With over a month of stay in the region, should spectators also worry about the safety of the water?

A report on Independent emphasized how tourists should also take extra caution.

"Not only are some 1,400 athletes at risk of getting violently ill in water competitions, but the [tests] indicate that tourists also face potentially serious health risks on the golden beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana," the report said.
