More and More High-Tech Thieves Thrive Through Electronic Pick-Pocketing
Manchester, NH -- (SBWire) -- 08/26/2016 --Identity theft is one of the high-tech crimes that continue to grow in many areas around the globe. What makes it even more alarming is that criminals do not have to even touch victims to commit the crime.
More and more high-tech thieves thrive through electronic pick-pocketing. The entire process can be extremely simple and unnoticeable. Thieves use card skimming devices to steal information from unsuspecting victims.
Otherwise known as crowd hacking or electronic pick-pocketing, this type of crime can victimize and be committed by anyone. All that fraudsters need to have is a card skimming device and a little knowledge about how the crime should be made.
In the United States, there are about 250 million credit cards that are RFID enabled. A chipped credit card is one that has a radio-frequency identification computer chip. This chip is designed to be scanned at businesses or establishments such as restaurants.
While RFID-enabled credit cards have some added security features, high-tech thieves use powerful skimming devices that can read and scan card information through the air. This means that by just being close to victims, they can steal information in just a matter of minutes.
According to Chris Gilpin, from the National Crime Stop Program, reveals that fraudsters can walk by victims at subways, airports, or shopping malls from up to 25 feet away and steal information. Consumers won't even know they are already being victimized by thieves.
Thieves have already mastered the process of electronic pick-pocketing. Unfortunately nowadays, the ones prosecuted are usually those that are in the front line and not the bosses. Consumers can only resort to precautionary measures that can help them increase their protection against fraudsters.
One of the best ways to protect debit and credit cards is to equip them with a bulletproof vest. There are those who use aluminum foil to ensure that card readers won't be able to scan credit card information.
There are also RFID blocking sleeves available that are extremely popular nowadays. These sleeves are designed for RFID-enabled credit cards, and are thought to be helpful in warding off fraudsters. They can be placed inside the wallet too so consumers can use them with ease.
The RFID blocking sleeves work by blocking the signals from card skimming devices, and thus, hinder them from reading information. Many consumers find these sleeves helpful since they can protect debit and credit cards as well as passports.
The RFID blocking sleeves are available at amazon.com.
