Auckland, New Zealand -- (SBWire) -- 09/07/2016 --Dr. Timur Kouliev and Dr. Victoria Cui have recently published findings on methods for preventing infection caused by Antarctic fur seal bites.

After being hunted nearly to extinction, the Antarctic fur seal population has rebounded at a substantial rate, and the species has moved across several islands south of the Antarctic Convergence, including South Georgia. Because the species now occupies space that overlaps popular travel destinations, the risk and rate of bites has risen due to human provocation.

Few humans realize how aggressive the animals are, and even fewer understand the danger of not treating a bite from one of the animals. If not treated, microorganisms exposed to the human body pose a significant risk.
