Sony has announced a new, slimmer version of the PlayStation 4 game console and a more powerful PS4 Pro, better known for its code name Neo, and PS4 Pro supports 4K and HDR.

Shenzhen, Guangdong -- (SBWire) -- 09/08/2016 --At the same day (September 7) when Apple announced iPhone 7 and Apple Watch 2, Sony also announced two new game consoles. The first one is a slimmer version of PlayStation 4. Still having the same name - PS4, the slimmer game console will replace the existing PS4 model, and it will be released on September 15, a week later from now. The second console called PS4 Pro with 4K and HDR support, better known for its code name Neo, will be released on November 10.

The slim version of the current PlayStation 4 console is to replace the current model, but will keep the same name PS4. In order to differentiate those two PS4 models, the slim version is unofficially named PS4 Slim. Compared to the current PS4 console, the new and slim unit is 30 percent smaller while Microsoft's Xbox One S is 40% smaller than Xbox One. The price for the PS4 Slim is $299/£259, the same price the original version costs right now. According to Sony, the slimmer version is 25 percent lighter than the original, and 34 percent more power efficient. Still, PS4 Slim plays all the same games the exact same way with the exact same internal hardware.

The PlayStation 4 Slim is not as much as a big upgrade considering it will replace the existing PlayStation 4 in stores while Sony's next game console PS4 Pro is indeed more powerful.

The PS4 Pro, formerly known as PS4 Neo, is an upgraded version of the current PS4 console. Costing $399/£349, it has new, more powerful AMD graphics hardware that can support both HDR video and 4K-resolution output. Not only video, but also games will support 4K and HDR.

There are many hardware upgrades in the PS4 Pro, including 1TB hard drive, doubled GPU power, and technology adapted from AMD Polaris graphical architecture. These allow the PS4 Pro to reach resolutions "not thought possible on consoles" in 2016. The CPU clockspeed has also been boosted. Unlike Microsoft's Xbox One S, the PS4 Pro will not have a 4K Blu-ray drive.

PS4 Pro will also improve the PlayStation VR experience, according to Mark Cerny, the chief architect for the PS4. Developers will be able to increase the crispness of scenes, up the frame rate, and more. For video streaming, Netflix and YouTube are also developing new apps specifically for the PS4 Pro. Upcoming exclusives such as Marvel's Luke Cage and Narcos Season 2 will support HDR streaming.
