The system recirculates a portion of the vehicle's exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber. This causes lower heat to be released reducing the formation of NOx. The high temperature within the combustion chamber causes nitrogen and oxygen to combine and form NOx. EGR lowers the concentration of oxygen by making available exhaust air containing carbon dioxide and water into the combustion chamber and limits the amount of NOx produced.
