Shenzhen, Guangdong -- (SBWire) -- 03/22/2017 --Google just rolled out a developer preview for the next version of Android on Tuesday, which is way ahead of its usual consumer preview in the fall and it's got tons of new features. In this latest version of Android, there would be significant improvements over battery life, notification center and multitasking, etc. Currently the official name for Android O still remains a secret. The official version of Android O is expected to be released in this fall.

Battery life has been a perennial problem ever since Android was released and Google has been attempting to make improvements on battery performance on Android devices. This time with the developer preview Android O, Google has gone further to improve battery life by optimizing background processing. This time Google is putting additional limits on what apps can do in the background. Limits will be applied in 3 main aspects: implicit broadcasts, background services and location updates. Google has shown real faith in its work with the limits and claim that they started working, apps will have minimal impact on the battery life of an Android device.

Another important update is the picture-in-picture support. This new feature would allow users to open two apps at the same time, a feature which Samsung and LG have had for years. But it's not totally the same as what Samsung has as on Android O, users are allowed to adjust the aspect ratio of the window. With the new feature, now users can watch videos on YouTube and download videos on Android and browse the website at the same time with ease.

One advantage Google has over iOS is the notification center. In Android O, Google further enhance the user experience with the notification center by introducing "app-defined categories for notification content" called "channels". It would allow users to define what notifications they'd receive in a channel.

Google isn't yet ready to unveil all the features that's coming in O to the public and it's certain that there would be more features included in the final version. So far the new features or improvements have shown enough of Google's effort in improving user experience.

Now the developer preview has been released so developers can download and start testing it. There are in total of 6 devices on the support list of this developer preview: Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P and Nexus Player. Google claimed that there would be 3 other Developer Preview coming in the future and the final release would be in the fall as expected.
