The market for sleep apnea therapy products has been growing over the years as diagnosis is becoming more prevalent. Patients are becoming more aware of this condition as apparent by the increasing number of PAP initiation and management procedures being conducted at hospitals.

This market has consistently been known to be limited by inefficiencies and patient discomfort for the devices required. Consequently, technology has been ever evolving and market segment growth continues to shift from one technology form to another. Similar to the oxygen therapy market, the market for sleep apnea devices is restricted by the Competitive Bidding Program, with consistent ASP declines as manufacturers push lower priced item products to win contracts for the Medicare program.

Over 50% of sleep apnea patients are covered by Medicare. With the aging population, this segment is set to drive growth of this market overall. Included in the sleep apnea market are the various positive airway pressure (PAP) devices as well as the market for the corresponding PAP masks which are used alongside the device. The market for PAP devices includes continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices, auto-titrating positive airway pressure (APAP) devices, and bi-level positive airway pressure (BiPAP) devices. These devices are categorized collectively as sleep therapy interfaces and correspond to the following PAP device masks: nasal pillow masks, full face masks and nasal masks. The market for sleep therapy devices is nearly double in size of the PAP device market as these consumables require replacement multiple times per year.

In general, almost all patients diagnosed with sleep apnea are covered by some sort of insurance policy. Most of sleep therapy products, i.e. devices and related masks are included in these plans.

Overall, the market for sleep therapy interfaces (masks) is set to grow at a faster rate than the positive airway market at a CAGR of 10.4%. Specifically driving growth in that market is the full-face and nasal pillow options are they offer greater patient comfort and have grown quite drastically in recent years. On the other hand, within the PAP device market, there has been a significant shift in markets away from CPAP devices towards APAP versions.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a respiratory disorder wherein an individual's airway is obstructed during sleep as muscles relax and the airway walls and tissue collapse. The resulting asphyxia arouses the individual from the deeper stages of sleep so that normal breathing can be restored. It is this disruption of regular sleep rhythms that causes the negative symptoms associated with sleep apnea. During these events (termed "apneic events"), breathing ceases long enough to allow several normal breaths to be missed. In order to be considered an apneic event, a ten second interval between breaths and neurological arousal and/or blood oxygen desaturation are required. In most cases, the sufferer is unaware of experiencing such an event at the time, often simply falling back asleep afterwards.
