A nebulizer is a piece of equipment used to assist breathing in the case that the lung is being affected with diseases such as asthma, cystic fibrosis and other respiratory conditions. The market for nebulizers typically corresponds to the delivery of asthma medications to anyone who has difficulty using a standard asthma inhaler, particularly infants and small children. Medication in liquid form is fed into a nebulizer which it then transforms it into a mist concentration in order to be more easily inhaled into the lungs.

Generally there are two types of nebulizers, either an "atomizer jet" or an "ultrasonic" version. The atomizer jet version is more commonly known as a "compressor nebulizer" and is the standard option available to the market. Compressor nebulizers function through using an aerosol compressor to vaporize droplets of medication. These compressors are effective in delivering formulations that cannot be delivered with pressurized metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs) and dry powder inhalers (DPIs), for instance, antibiotics, mucolytics, liposomal formulations and recombinant products. On the other hand, jet nebulizers can be difficult to use because of their need for compressed gas and additional tubing.

Through improvements in the nebulizer design, new jet nebulizers either have reservoirs that conserve aerosols or use baffles that reduce the size of large particles and increase the efficiency of aerosol therapy. They also have breath-enhanced aerosol production that leads to greater drug delivery, a larger fine-particle fraction, and less drug loss during expiration.

Ultrasonic nebulizers incorporate a piezoelectric crystal vibrating at high frequencies in order to produce aerosol. They are divided into two categories: large-volume ultrasonic nebulizers and small-volume ultrasonic nebulizers. Whereas large-volume ultrasonic nebulizers are most commonly used to deliver hypertonic saline for sputum induction, small-volume ultrasonic nebulizers are used for delivery of inhaled medications. Ultrasonic nebulizers have many limitations compared to jet nebulizers. For instance, they have large residual volumes, an inability to aerosolize viscous solutions and degradation of heat-sensitive materials. Therefore, they should not be used with suspensions and proteins

The market for nebulizers typically contains a compressor and a nebulizer cup. The nebulizer device can be categorized as a "compressor" version which is either a tabletop type and requires be plugging in and typically utilizing at home while there is a more costly hand-held version that is battery powered and used on the go. Alternatively, there are ultrasonic and vibrating mesh nebulizers which achieve transformation of medicine to liquid with high frequency sound waves.
