Sarasota, FL -- (SBWire) -- 05/14/2018 --Coronary Stents Market: Overview

A coronary stent is a medical device used in angioplasty, an important treatment for removing blockages in the arteries surrounding the heart (a condition known as Coronary Artery Disease). Stents are usually put into the segment of the coronary artery that was made wider by angioplasty procedure. They are expanded and left there to keep the artery wide stretched. Over time, the lining of the artery grows over the stent, so that the metal support i.e., the stent becomes a part of the artery wall.

Angioplasty is a technique in which the surgeon threads a balloon-tipped catheter from an ingress point to the heart. Using imaging devices, the surgeon positions the balloon tip across the blockage, and expands the balloon, compressing the blockage to the artery walls. A stent is a small metal tube that is then placed via catheter where the blockage was cleared and left in the body as structural support for the damaged artery wall.

Based on the type of stents used they are segmented as, Bare Metal stents- These are tubular, mesh-like stents that do not have any medications embedded in them, Drug-Eluting Stents- These stents are coated with medications that avert inflammation and restenosis of the artery for a longer period of time and Bioresorbable Stents- These were introduced to overcome downsides of metallic drug-eluting stents such as late in-stent restenosis and persistently caging the vessel. It provides temporal support to the vessel during healing before being degraded and absorbed by the body, promoting restoration of the vessel vasomotion.
