Buffett Says Euro Collapse Is Not Unthinkable

Financial advisor Dennis Tubbergen takes a closer look at comments recently made by Warren Buffett.

Grand Rapids, MI -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/26/2011 -- When individuals decide to watch a well-known investor to see what is going on in the world of finance, a lot of times that person is Warren Buffett. Financial advisor Dennis Tubbergen recently took notice when Buffett was quoted in a CNBC article March 24, 2011 as saying that the collapse of the Euro as a currency is “not unthinkable.”

Tubbergen is a financial advisor, advisor to financial advisors, author and radio talk show host. In a blog he posted on his website on March 23, 2011, Tubbergen discussed Buffett’s recent comments.

Tubbergen quotes the CNBC article with Buffett saying, “I know some people think it’s unthinkable . . . I don’t think it’s unthinkable. You can’t have three or four or five countries that are in effect free-riding on the other countries. That won’t work over time – they have to get their fiscal houses in reasonable harmony.”

The article goes on to say that Buffett does believe “huge efforts” will be made to save the Euro.

“Wow, the guy that’s probably the most respected investor in the world says that the collapse of the Euro is within the realm of possibility if struggling countries like Portugal don’t get their finances in order,” cites Tubbergen. “Given those comments, you’d expect that the Euro might be declining against the U.S. Dollar, wouldn’t you?”

Tubbergen claims that is not the case, and shows a chart on his website that tracks the U.S. Dollar.

“The chart, from January to the present, shows a decline in the U.S. Dollar,” concludes Tubbergen. “In spite of the problems that exist in the European Union, the Euro is continuing to gain against the U.S. Dollar. What does that tell you about the condition of the U.S. Dollar?”
