According to Jeff Klapp at TraceGains, “The discrete manufacturers’ job is much easier – they have a part number and exact specifications but do not have the variability that food ingredients have. Also, the government allows them to share information much more freely than CPG companies. The range of raw material/ingredient variability is unique to the food supply chain. Thus the business rules based upon variability ranges etc. The discrete manufacturing suppliers supply chain participants are much more visible and easily identified. The food supply chain is much less visible, fragmented, and has many more participants.”

In many high-performance picking operations how the cartons or totes get to the pick areas can be just as important as the pick process itself. LP Convey can help streamline that process. LP Convey makes use of data within the Lightning Pick database to understand the container routing requirements. The system integrates with conveyor control programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and the conveyor mounted bar code readers over Ethernet network to identify and divert containers into required pick areas. The unique decision point configuration approach relieves the PLC of data handling tasks associated with most bar code based applications and results in a system that is easily modified and maintained by plant personnel.

TraceGains’ Profit Optimizer enables businesses to find and analyze the most critical value chain connections and sources of impact. Poorly performing suppliers can be properly counseled or replaced, and adverse internal events or practices can be minimized or eliminated entirely. By correlating and analyzing previously disparate data sets in the value chain, only TraceGains makes it possible to connect upstream inputs, suppliers, and raw materials to downstream outcomes such as product quality or customer satisfaction. Companies can then coach or replace poorly performing suppliers and counteract profit-draining events within the enterprise, and also perpetuate positive practices internally and throughout the supply chain, to achieve complete profit optimization.

When the customer asks for a delivery date and price, the clarity of the answer often determines whether there is a sale or not. To attract and keep customers, the ability to take orders from different channels, push maximum sales to the customer, be prepared to answer questions regarding availability and pricing issues, and handle the inevitable return of some purchased items, are all fundamental quality issues. The escalating requirements of large customers create painful challenges for those companies still tied to conventional supply-chain processes.

In the May issue of Warehouse Management News, QC Software looks at Cycle Counting: Tips and Benefits. According to Rich Hite, President, “We all know what happens when inventory records are inaccurate: 1) shortages and the inability to locate inventory result in lower productivity, more expedited orders, and fewer on-time deliveries 2) too much inventory results in increased costs and inefficiencies. The bottom line is lost revenue and higher operating costs. So counting inventory is important for maintaining accurate records as well as optimizing your business.”
