Las Vegas, NV -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/11/2016 -- Curcumin is a powerful phytochemical found in turmeric, which is an ancient spice believed to have medicinal purposes. Turmeric (containing curcumin) is gaining international popularity, especially among individuals who want to try and naturally aid a range of conditions.
The potentially therapeutic phytochemical called curcumin is believed to be helpful in fighting genital warts. These small, benign lesions affect the skin and are typically causes by human papilloma virus (HPV).
Warts are characterized by flesh-colored and elevated lesions that are usually tan, pink, or white in color. They can affect any part of the body but are usually common in the areas of the fingers and hands. There are flat warts and there are also common warts that have a bumpy appearance.
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, warts can be directly transmitted by touching an object that has already been contaminated by someone infected with the HPV virus.
Robert Gary, PH.D., an associate professor of microbiology and immunology at Tulane University School of Medicine, reveals that roughly 10% of the population are affected by warts at any given time. There are certain treatments for the condition such as liquid nitrogen, cryosurgery, and lasers. There are also natural alternatives such as the use of turmeric.
Most of the potentially beneficial attributes of turmeric are thought to come from curcumin. This active ingredient contains a variety of ingredients that are believed to contain antibacterial, anti-carcinogenic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiseptic properties. The People's Pharmacy reveals that curcumin's potentially antiviral properties may be effective against warts.
In a clinical study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, it was found that curcumin extracts have successfully prevented the replication of hepatitis-B virus cells. The possible antiviral and antibacterial effects of turmeric are thought to help fight viruses.
To obtain the potentially beneficial effects of curcumin, wart sufferers may combine turmeric powder with olive oil to make a paste. They may then apply the turmeric paste to the affected areas and cover them with a surgical tape.
Turmeric powder is widely available at the grocery and local health stores. It can be added to a range of dishes and beverages. It can also be combined with herbs and other natural ingredients to make a paste.
Curcumin can also be taken orally through supplementation. There are curcumin supplements available that are thought to contain a variety of therapeutic properties.
Some of the more recommended curcumin supplements contain piperine, which is a black pepper extract. Piperine is believed to be a bioavailability-enhancing ingredient, which may increase the body's ability to absorb the potentially therapeutic properties of curcumin.
