A Study Reveals the Potential Benefits of Turmeric for Gastritis

Orlando, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/31/2015 -- Gastritis, which can be acute or chronic, develops when the lining of the stomach gets irritated, inflamed or eroded. This is often caused by excess alcohol consumption, frequent vomiting, stress and long term usage of anti-inflammatory drugs. The good news is that sufferers have excellent remedies to choose from, including a powerful natural alternative called turmeric.

A study reveals the potential benefits of turmeric for gastritis. This condition often causes symptoms such as hiccups, chronic diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal bloating, vomiting blood, black stools or burning sensation in the stomach. When not properly or immediately addressed, it can lead to ulcers and increased risk of stomach cancer.

"Gastritis is often treated with the use of drugs and the right diet," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

Turmeric is popularized by the anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant properties it contains. It is believed to be helpful in lowering the levels of inflammatory enzymes in the body. Its use is also associated with an improvement in digestion through aiding in bile production by the gall bladder. Its antioxidant properties are also believed to help provide protection against cell damage from free radicals. For centuries, turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for gastritis. Experts believe that it can help reduce stomach acids and prevent inflammation in the intestinal walls.

In a study, researchers tried to determine the effects of the spice on peptic ulcers and gastritis. The study involved 24 male and 21 female sufferers of peptic ulcers. Some of them underwent endoscopies and were given capsules filled with turmeric powder. It was found that within a couple of weeks, the participants experienced relief from symptoms of gastritis.

Individuals who suffered from stomach erosion, dyspepsia and gastritis were also subjected to a 4-week course of turmeric capsules. It was found that there was a reduction in the abdominal discomfort and pain, and the participants were able to eat normal food once again. They also did not experience any side effects as they all had normal renal and liver functions.

Gastritis, peptic ulcers and gastric cancer are often caused by the Helicobacter pylori bacteria. The good news is that curcumin seems to prevent the growth of the bacteria. In a study, it was found that curcumin protected mice from gastric damage by eradicating the helicobacter pylori bacteria. There are many curcumin supplements available nowadays, and experts suggest that consumers choose a product that contains a combination of curcumin and black pepper extract, which increases nutrient absorption (amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
