Advantages of the Bradley Pecan Tree - The Queen of Pecans

Learn more about the Bradley pecan tree and its benefits at Stahmann farms.

La Luz, NM -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/24/2017 -- Stahmann Farms, one of the largest pecan growers in the world, has a 3,200 acre pecan farm that produces between eight and nine million pounds of bulk pecan nuts every year. These pecan nuts come from three main varieties of pecan trees on the estate: Western Schley, Wichita, and the Bradley. Of the three, the Bradley tends to be less popular, but not according to Deane Stahmann, who once said "If the Western Schley is the king of pecans, then Bradley is the queen."

While the Western Schley is considered to be the "workhorse" of pecan trees, it wouldn't yield as many pecan nuts without the help of the Bradley. Bradleys are typically used as pollinators for Western Schley pecan trees because they shed pollen later in the season at the perfect time for pollinating the Westerns. Another advantage of mature Bradley pecan trees being "late bloomers" is that they are more resistant to freezes since the buds are still tight when the buds on others, like the Western, might be open and more susceptible to a late season frost.

Bradleys are also consistent bearers and not known for alternate bearing–a cycle between a pecan tree producing high yields one year and low yields the next. The Bradleys consistently produce good sized pecans–but still smaller than the Western Schley's– year-after-year, just fewer of them.

Where other pecan trees, such as the Wichita, struggle in some types of soil, the Bradley thrives in many different soil types, making them one of the more adaptable types of pecan trees.
